About the Contributor(s) | Mike Berenstain Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bears books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country. |

A celebration in Bear Country wouldn't be complete without food and festivities. As the family prepares for the parade by decorating their bikes and trying on old military uniforms, a wonderful discussion ensues about the birth of America. When Sister asks "You mean countries are born like babies?" Papa gives a recap of how our beloved country was started and the sacrifices made by brave men and women.
As the Fourth quickly approaches I urge you to read this book with your kiddos and then take it a step further and find a celebration near you. Everyone needs to experience a small town Fourth of July celebration. Parades, pie eating contests, cake walks, potato sack races and then the grand finale . . . fireworks! Our freedom was hard fought and won. Go enjoy it!

I liked the introduction to the Fourth of July in this book. I also liked how the Bear Family participated in the parade. I enjoyed the sense of family and that kids get to read about that.
Also, I liked that the book came with a sticker sheet. I know I would have enjoyed this when I was younger and I liked that addition.
I found the illustrations to be consistent with the other books in this series. I found them to be fitting with the story and ones I think many kids will enjoy.
I am still having trouble with the Biblical aspect of this series. I’m not sure if they are just trying to throw a Bible verse into some of the books in this series to make it more faith based or what, but this book is another example of a time I wish they just left out the Bible verse. In this book, Mama Bear is talking to Sister Bear about America and how the country was founded. She says, “As the Bible says, ‘He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.’” While I understand the tie in, this verse is really out of context as it was not referring to America at all. I think the use of this verse could confuse children.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. If it wasn’t for the Bible verse being stuck in it, I would have given this a five star rating.

The Berenstain Bears have been a mainstay in my children's lives since they were born and were actually a big part of my own childhood. God Bless our Country is a great patriotic and Godly book about the men and women that serve our country and earned us the freedoms we enjoy today.
Just reading the first page of this book made me nostalgic for summer and the picture made me think of wonderful things to come! I like that the bears are so involved in their community and are all taking part in the local 4th of July parade. It sets a good example for my kids and our family as my son is starting to participate in things like this in Cub Scouts.
This book is a great little history lesson and always family friendly with wonderful lessons for all! The Berenstain Bears God Bless our Country is getting us ready for the patriotic holidays to come! There are some fun stickers as a bonus in this one that my daughter really enjoyed as well! This is an adorably written book with great illustrations. Although the pages are filled with the preparations and fun of getting ready for the celebration, it brings to light the true meaning of that celebration in a way that is easy for children to understand.
It is a well written and beautifully illustrated book, that I would recommend for any child. I love the Berenstain Bears and am always delighted when I can share another of their adventures with my grandchildren, nieces and nephews. This is a great book for ages 4-8.
Disclosure: I was given a copy of this Book by the publisher, ZonderKidz, Z Blog Squad for an honest review. I was not required to write a favorable review nor was I compensated for my review. The opinions in this review are my own.
