Has anyone seen my time? I’ve misplaced it.

We have schedule planners, computerized calendars, smart phones, and sticky notes to help us organize our business and social lives every day. But what about organizing the other side of our lives―the spiritual side?

One of the great battlegrounds is within the private world of the individual. The values of our Western culture would have us believe the busy, publicly active person in ministry is also the most spiritual. Tempted to give imbalanced attention to the public world at the expense of the private, we become involved in more programs, more meetings. Our massive responsibilities at home, work, and church have resulted in many good people on the verge of collapse.

In this updated classic Ordering Your Private World, Gordon MacDonald equips a new generation to live life from the inside out, cultivating the inner victory necessary for public effectiveness.

“With much enthusiasm I recommend this book to all of you who, like me, need order in your private world.”

―Charles Swindoll, Chancellor, Dallas Theological Seminary

“This book was the primary instrument that God used to motivate me to integrate spiritual disciplines into my daily walk with Christ . . . I shudder to think where I’d be today had I not read it.”

―Bill Hybels, Senior pastor, Willow Creek Community Church

Ordering Your Private World by Gordon MacDonald, if I could use one word that sums up my experience reading it, it would be helpful. Upon completing the book I feel, for lack of a more appropriate word, helped – and helped a great deal. For a little while now one of my primary pursuits has been exactly what MacDonald covers in this book, the health and proper ordering of what he calls “the private world.” So, this book fed right into my own experience, of late.

The book, in my opinion, did start off a bit slow – it was a slow trod in its early chapters. In another book that I read recently, Keeping Place by Jen Pollock Michel (which, too, was incredibly helpful), Ordering Your Private World was referenced/cited regularly, so I came into my reading of it with high hopes. And it took a little while before it lived up to those expectations that I had set for it with the help of Michel. But once the wheels got turning a bit, the content became invaluable. I am of the opinion that our contemporary Christian culture is starving for many of the principles that MacDonald lays out in his work here, not merely because they contribute to our own personal spiritual health (though they certainly do that), but because they foster an ever-deepening knowledge and relationship with the God who our lives are dependent on and oriented around. Quite simply, this book serves its reader well, encouraging and challenging us to pursue God with an undivided devotion.

Even considering what I considered to be a slow start, MacDonald’s writing turned out to be quite engaging. Aside from the wisdom that’s just spilling out of this book, one of my favorite aspects of his work here is his frequent use of story. He sets aside a large chunk of many of his chapters to weave his own personal experiences into his content, tapping into the wisdom that he’s gained from the full life that he’s lived. Being a younger man myself, there’s much that I can and have learned from this older saint and I would commend his work to you as well, whether you’re young or old. (Posted on 9/24/2017)
