- Book introductions with information about the author, when and where the book was written, who the original audience was, along with facts about their culture and even a timeline of events that are recorded in the book. (These introductions are adapted from the NIV Archaeological Study Bible.)
- NIV concordance and colored maps located in the back of the Bible
- Journaling space in the margin, throughout the Bible, and at the end of each book
- Red letter font for words spoken by Jesus
- Study notes at the bottom of each page and cross referencing scripture listed in the margins. (The study notes at the bottom of each page are adapted from the NIV Archaeological Study Bible.)
- SOAP (Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer) and LifeConnect articles are intended to encourage the reader to study, connect and apply scripture to their life
- Digital resources for each book of the Bible
I really like the the book introduction because it gives me some basic background information on the book of the Bible I am studying. I think this Bible gives just the right amount of study notes and maps to peek my interest, which encouraged me to look up the scripture in my commentaries for more detailed notes. Both the SOAP and LifeConnect articles really help me to connect with scripture and apply it to my life.
The hardback cover is a basic design. I wish they had used the leafy design right on the Bible instead of on the paper cover to give it a more attractive design.
I take notes in my Bible and I thought the journaling space in the margin would be great. While the margin is larger than what I have now, it doesn't meet my expectations of "journaling space." It has printed lines for 9 point font, and I don't know many people who write that small.
As for the journaling pages, I'm not really sure what to do with these pages. I was expecting blank pages or lined pages for note taking, but the page is set up for a date, a 3-5 word title and what page the scripture can be located on. I think these pages were intended to be used with the SOAP articles, but again I don't really see how they would be journaling pages since there isn't room for actual note taking. Perhaps if you have a separate journal you could use these pages as title pages for your entries in your other journal... but then again, that would still not be helpful for people who want to write notes directly in their Bible.
Overall, I would say that this Bible has some good features, but it is also missing the mark as a journaling Bible. I would recommend this Bible to someone who is looking for a good study Bible, but not to someone who is looking for a journaling/note taking Bible.

There are so many things competing for our attention these days and that makes it hard to love our Bibles. To love something, we actually have to WANT to spend time with that particular thing we love, right? See where I'm going with this?

I LOVE MY BIBLE!! I love everything about The Word. I use it every single solitary day of my life. And just like the NIV Life Connect Study Bible claims, all these extra special features make my journey through The Word much more profitable. I was already familiar with the S.O.A.P acronym study method and when I saw it was incorporated I to this Bible I was ecstatic!! I believe this tool is invaluable for digging deeper into the various hard to interpret passages, and the easy ones too! Actually, S.O.A.P can be applied to ANY passage. Along with the wider margins for note taking, there are these wonderful things called Life Journal Pages. They are used to record responses to what you read. This way, you have a record of the nuggets you glean from your study. The Life Journal Pages typically occur at the end of each book. There is also an index so you know what passages you studied and what you learned.
My other favorite feature appears in the book introductions. A section called "As You Read" offers things to look for when reading such as key words and themes. "Did You Know?" provides facts about people, places and things in that chapter. The verse numbers are included for your convenience.
The NIV Life Connect Bible is A-MAY- ZING!!! I have yet to find a study Bible so in tuned with today's bible students. The Bible has it all!! If you want a one stop bible study shop buy this Bible. I honestly can't think of even one reason NOT to purchase The NIV Life Connect Study Bible. I even enjoy the layout of the cross references. My rating is 5/5. Zondervan did it again, with the help of Dr. Wayne Cordero.
