One of my very favorite activities during the Christmas season is to attend the children's Christmas program at our church. What could be more darling than little shepherds dressed in their daddy's old bathrobe? Or how about the shy little angel that suddenly bursts into tears? All of it is just precious.

Mary Engelbreit has captured the beautiful simplicity of this traditional event in her very own whimsical way. She happens to be one of my favorite artists and this book showcases the very best of her talents. It will definitely become a treasured part of our yearly Christmas book reading.

If you are like we are and do a nightly Christmas book reading leading up to Christmas then I can't recommend this book enough. It is sure to delight the little ones because they can envision themselves in the same roles but it will also bring a smile to the adults' faces as they recall Christmas programs of the past. I personally look forward to sharing this book with each of my grands.

A Night of Great Joy is yet another favorite Christmas book in our house. Mary Engelbreit writes this book creatively as a story within a story. The setting takes place at a school Christmas Pageant. The story within the story is of course the birth of Jesus.

A Night of Great Joy is written simply and it does seem like you are at a school Christmas Pageant. The characters are illustrated just as if you might be at a school Christmas Pageant too. The children’s expressions and focus are fitting. Looking at all the details of the pictures really helps slow down the book and the story so there is time to take it all in.

I feel like there are many reasons to have several Christmas books about the birth of Jesus because each author conveys it in a different way. We have several and cherish every single one. This year for Christmas I am going to give gifts in the theme of books and will pick up a few more of A Night of Great Joy to give to my nieces and nephews this year. (Posted on 10/19/2016)

Who doesn't love a Christmas pageant?

I've long been a fan of Mary Engelbreit's illustrations and of Christmas pageants. A Night of Great Joy embraces the colorful whimsy of her art with the sweet, often amusing joy of a children's play. Mary's simple telling of Jesus birth pairs beautifully with her wonderful illustrations. I love the expressions on the faces of the diverse cast of children as they participate in the most important holiday story. And the shepherds and angels are a hoot. Parents and children will have a lot of fun reading this version of the Christmas story. I see this becoming a classic in years to come. If I could only buy one Christmas book for the children in my life this year, I'd choose this one. I received this book for free from Zonderkidz. (Posted on 10/10/2016)

Christmas is such a precious time of food and family. I love the time set apart to enjoy some great tasting food and having some downtime with the ones I love. Mary Engelbreit, always has the best books and products. They are just simply beautiful. She is the Norman Rockwell of our time, I believe. She always has the most beautiful words and illustrations. Settling down in front of the fire with my family beside me reading one of her books is always a great idea.

This one talks all about Jesus and what happened with the story of the virgin birth but set in a Christmas pageant type form. This book would make a great coffee table book during the holidays.

“A Night of Great Joy” was sent to me by Zonderkidz - a division of Zondervan Publishing – free of charge, in exchange for my honest and not coerced review.
“A Night of Great Joy” is a children’s Christian picture book, written and illustrated by Mary Engelbreit.
In this precious book, we find the story of Jesus’ birth, from Luke 2, written for a child to enjoy. I love the beautiful pictures that use little children, from many ethnicities, for its characters.
I believe this book is written so that an early reader can enjoy it. I would definitely recommend this for young readers, for those who read to them.
